With the increased focus on using social networking sites to grow your business and find prospects, some folks are getting a little lost with just how to do it right. Now if you remember I talked about social networking previously right here on this blog.
But I’m still seeing increasing numbers of marketers setting up accounts at Twitter or Facebook or MySpace and then posting nothing but links to their own content/products/opportunities. ![]()
If you have to promote your own content all of the time and nobody else promotes it for you, if you are the only person hitting the ’share this’ link, then that should be ringing alarm bells in your head. And if it isn’t, you obviously need to go away and rethink your whole social networking strategy.
Social networking starts with making friends and how do you do that? You do stuff for people. You ‘bookmark’ their stuff, you comment on their postings, you share a laugh with them, you take the time to find out their interests and point them in the best direction (not in your direction)to get more information.
Social networking isn’t about ‘you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours’. Far from it. Though if done correctly this is usually what happens! But somebody has to scratch first - and if you want to be top of the social media buzz, then that had better be you.
Perry Belcher did a really cool video on social media, and if you like partying,(
), you should be able to get this message real clear. And the fact that I’m sharing this video with you, proves that this stuff works, if you do it right.

P.S. If you’ve got a really cool ‘itch’ you’d like some help with scratching, let me know. ![]()
I know you’re shocked.
