It’s always been a problem - spam and spammers seem to find you no matter how hard you try to hide or protect yourself. And with the rise of social networking, it’s becoming even more of a problem.

When will people learn that spamming isn’t a marketing strategy. It’s nothing more than a big, fat, pain in the butt. (would like to be a little less politically correct, but I have a reputation to uphold).

I have no doubt there’s an initial gain to be made, a few clicks are inevitable. And if you manage to catch the total newbies who don’t know their computer from their keyboard, then you might even make a sale here or there.

But how many idiots can you catch? Even if you go round spamming every social network as soon as it opens for business, it doesn’t take long before your account is suspended and then you’re left having to find another, and another. Pretty soon, the only social networking sites you’ll be able to spam will be those that are designed, run and frequented by spammers like yourself.

Thankfully, most reputable networks don’t tolerate it. Mainly because the members of such sites are folks interested in keeping their own reputation. And that doesn’t include being associated in any way, shape or form with spam.

You will never build a successful business using spamming as your primary marketing strategy. In fact, you will never build any sort of business if spamming is a part of any your marketing strategies. Keeping a clean slate on a couple of social sites, while spamming others, won’t work. Search engines are too clever and members are too fed up with having to wade through a heap of garbage looking to find something useful, only to find there isn’t anything useful there.

How many Twitter followers do you have where you haven’t reciprocated the follow because when you check their Tweets, every single one of them is a link to their site, their blog, their latest affiliate programme…

How many friends on Facebook where every message is the same?

Pleeaaasse, YUK, YUK, Double YUK!

If there’s a quicker way to blow your reputation, I can’t think of it. And if you know of any, keep them to yourself.
